The Battle of Bentonville was named after a village in the US state of North Carolina , west of Goldsborough . From March 19 to 21, 1865, shortly before the end of the American Civil War , there were bloody skirmishes between the troops of the Union under General Sherman with a strength of about 60,000 men and the remnants of the Tennessee Army under Johnston with 20,000 Soldiers instead.

In this battle, from which the Northern States emerged victorious, Sherman lost 1,646 of his soldiers. 3,092 soldiers died in Johnston's army.
