Battle of Dandanqan
The battle of dandanaqan ( DMG Dandānqān) took place on 23. May 1040 between Seljuks and Ghaznavids instead. It ended in a victory for the Seljuks and ended the rule of the Ghaznavids over Khorasan .
Preparations
When the Seljuk Sultan Toghril Beg and his brother Chaghri Beg began to build a strong army, it became a serious threat to the Ghaznavids. After Seljuk looters set fire to the Ghaznavid border towns, Sultan Masud I of Ghazna (the son of Mahmud of Ghazna ) decided to force the Seljuks to leave his territory.
The battle
While the Masud's army was marching on Sarach , the Seljuk looters tired the Ghaznavid units with hit-and-run attacks . Seljuk raiders also damaged the supply lines of the Ghaznavids and cut them off from nearby water sources. The discipline and morale of the Ghaznavid army seriously deteriorated. Finally, on May 23, 1040, 20,000 Seljuk soldiers attacked 50,000 Ghaznavid soldiers at Dandanqan between Merw and Sarachs.
consequences
The three-day battle ended in a victory for the Seljuks and Masud fled the battlefield with only 100 riders. The victory marked the rise of the Seljuks to greater power and the decline of the Ghaznavids. The Seljuks occupied the Chorasan cities and established an empire later known as the Greater Seljuk Empire .
