The Battle of Guiling ( Chinese  桂 陵 之 戰  /  桂 陵 之 战 , Pinyin Guìlíng zhī zhàn ) was fought between the states of Qi and Wei during the Warring States' times. 354 BC An army from Wei besieged the capital of Zhao State , Handan . The long siege of the city could not be lifted until a year later with the support of the state of Qi. Qi generals Tian Ji and Sun Bin attacked the capital of Wei state, Daliang , to force the elite Wei troops to break the siege of Handan. The commander of the siege army, Pang Juan , then marched with his troops to Daliang to relieve them. On the way, however, he was ambushed by Sun, beaten with his army and himself captured.

The battle forms the basis for the Chinese saying “ Siege Wei to save Zhao” ( 圍魏救趙  /  围魏救赵 , wéiwèi-jiùzhào ), which is also recorded in the 36 stratagems .
