The Battle of Hanna ( Turkish : Felahiye Muharebesi) is the name given to the fighting that took place on January 21, 1916 between the British-Indian and Ottoman troops . The British did not succeed in liberating their compatriots besieged in kut under Charles Vere Ferrer's Townshend .

battle

After the Battle of the Wadi , the Ottomans withdrew under Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz . They set up their new camp near el-Hanna, a narrow strip of dry land between the Tigris and the Suwaikiya swamps. Fenton Aylmer tried a new attack against the Ottomans, despite heavy losses in the last battle, although heavy rain made a victory impossible. The well-developed Ottoman positions forced the British, who were caught in the Ottoman machine gun fire during the attack , to retreat.

consequences

After the battle it was clear that the British could not free their trapped comrades. Despite two further attempts at liberation, the troops trapped in Kut finally had to surrender on April 29th.
