The first battle of Jemgum ( Dutch Slag bij Jemmingen ) took place in 1533 during the Geldrian feud . During this war, Balthasar von Esens tried to regain his rule in the Harlingerland with the help of the Duke of Geldern . The troops of the Duke of Geldern and Balthasars, around 2000 mercenaries trained in weapons, penetrated East Frisia and holed up in the Jemgum church. The advancing Count's East Frisian armed forces were mostly inadequately trained, but numerically far superior. The East Frisian Counts Enno and Johann Cirksena even turned down an offer from the Geldrian troops to surrender and withdraw from East Frisia without a fight.
But the counts then acted so tactically clumsy that their troops were shot down and driven into wild flight. Although only a comparatively small number of people were killed with 400 men, among the dead on the part of the East Frisians were numerous nobles who had ridden at the head of their army. As a result of the battle, Leer and Oldersum were set on fire and looted. At the end of the war, Balthasar was back in office and dignity, but as a Geldrian vassal .
