The Schlattstein is a large erratic block near Netstal in the canton of Glarus . It is considered the largest boulder in the canton and a symbol of the village.

location

The stone is north-east of the village on the other side of the Linth at an altitude of 490  m above sea level. M. on a meadow. It is visible from the train station and can be easily reached on foot in 10 minutes via a path.

Surname

The name Schlattstein refers to the meadow called Schlatt , on which the stone stands. Schlatt originally referred to a reed-covered, moist meadow, or the marsh grass growing on it, later also a valley, hollow, slope of a hill, pasture on a hill or meadow between fields.

Geologically, the Schlattstein consists of a type of verrucano rock from the Tödi region . It was left here by the Linth Glacier on its retreat around 25,000 years ago .

It was supposed to be blown up twice so that building material could be extracted from it. In 1784 the demolition masters found the block not worthwhile and withdrew without having achieved anything. A request to blow up the stone was rejected by the local council in 1890. At the request of the Nature Conservation Commission of the Canton of Glarus, the boulder was placed under nature protection in 1908. On May 31, 1942, this was carved into the stone on behalf of the Natural Research Society:

Climbing stone

With its height of around 7 meters, the Schlattstein is popular as a climbing stone. In terms of climbing technology, the stone has a lot to offer and there is something for every level of difficulty, writes a boulderer .
