The Templin lock , also called the Templin city lock , is located at kilometer 13.32 of the Templin waters in the extreme southwest of the Uckermark district in the town of Templin in northern Brandenburg . It was built in 1894/95 and modernized in 2004/2005. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible.

history

The first comprehensive economic development of the Templin waters took place in 1745. The Templin waters consist of the Templin Canal, also known regionally as Templiner Water , and several lakes. The waterway can be reached via the Upper Havel waterway .

Building

The lock was built in 1894/95 in connection with the expansion of the Templin Canal for the Finow Maßkahn ship . The lock system is spanned almost in the middle by a bridge. Landesstraße 23 leads over the bridge. Lychener Straße from the north and Mühlenstraße from the south meet on the bridge. Since the bridge was rebuilt in 1959, damage to the lock has been found and the condition of the facility has deteriorated continuously. Due to the poor condition of the Templin lock, it was shortened to a usable length of 25 meters in 1974 and was then no longer usable for cargo shipping. The dilapidated condition ultimately led to the lock being closed to all shipping traffic on May 31, 1988. After the fall of the Wall, there were calls for the lock to be restored, as it was missing as a link to the waters of interest in the area for water sports and tourism. After extensive investigations, it was decided to carry out the replacement construction at the location of the old, still existing lock. Construction work on the replacement building began on February 23, 2004. The new city lock was opened to traffic on September 8, 2005. The Templin lock has a usable chamber length of 28.50 meters and a chamber width of 4.93 meters. The height of fall at mean water is 4.20 meters. After a modernization it works in automatic mode or has to be operated by yourself.

With the replacement of the Templin lock in 2005, the Templin waters have become an attractive destination for recreational shipping.
