Architecture and history

The core of the five-axis Schlippenbach House, designed in the classicism style, goes back to the 17th century. The craftsmen Peter Kleen and Hinr built between 1661 and 1665 . Forberg was initially a single-storey building. In the second half of the 18th century a second floor was added to the house. Further modifications followed. In 1825 the portico was built with four Tuscan columns that support a central balcony in front of the first floor .

At the beginning of the 18th century, Wolmar Anton von Schlippenbach , who was temporarily governor-general of Swedish Estonia, lived in the house. From December 24, 1711 to January 7, 1712, the Russian Tsar Peter the Great and his wife Catherine I stayed in the house during their visit to Reval. A historical marble plaque reminding of this was missing again in 1947. Today a newer plaque commemorates the two well-known guests of the house. Wolmar Anton von Schlippenbach owned the building until 1721. As a result, the owner changed frequently until it came into the ownership of the von Meyendorff family in 1844 .

The interior of the house is characterized by a magnificently designed staircase from the late classicism period. Other furnishing elements have also been preserved from this period.

The ground floor of the building is now used by the Estonian post office, Eesti Post . Apartments are located on the upper storey.

The Schlippenbach House was registered as a monument on April 15, 1997 and is registered under number 3005 in the Estonian Register of Monuments .
