history

The neo-classical building was built in 1748–1754 by the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff on the west side of the Marstall of the Potsdam City Palace. Frederick the Great expanded the Breite Strasse at the then city palace with the impressive buildings into a boulevard. The houses at Schloßstraße 13 and 14 were built as head buildings and symmetrical gate-like edging of Breite Straße. The restoration took place in 1977-82.

In the first half of the 20th century, the restaurant "Zum Lustgarten" was located in the house. After a renovation between 1977 and 1982, the building served the club of artists and architects Eduard Claudius with a restaurant, an event hall and several offices . After years of vacancy, the Brandenburgische Spielbanken GmbH & Co. KG converted the building into a casino in accordance with the historic monuments. On January 4th, 2002 the casino in Potsdam opened "Joker's Garden" with slot machines and classic roulette , poker and blackjack tables at Schloßstraße 14.

architecture

The two-storey house with a rectangular floor plan is covered with a hipped roof. The nine-axis facade is structured by a central projection in which a simple round arched portal opens. The windows in the basement are rectangular in shape and feature trapezoidal keystones that extend to the surrounding frieze that marks the boundary between the basement and the upper storey. Nine simple, undecorated arched windows open up on the upper floor.
