Interior of the Celle Castle Theater

The Celle Castle Theater is a court theater that was created in the course of the renovation and Baroque transformation of the Celle Castle . It was founded in the years 1670 to 1674/75 on the initiative of the opera lover Georg Wilhelm , Prince of Lüneburg from the House of Braunschweig and Lüneburg . After a heyday in the 18th century with a permanent ensemble, the performances declined more and more until the neglected house completely stopped playing in 1890. In 1935 it was extensively renovated and revived. The baroque theater with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium based on the Italian model is one of the oldest theater buildings in Europe.

The auditorium offers a total of 330 seats in the stalls and in the two tiers, the second of which was added later in the 18th century. At the end of the 2009/2010 season, the theater moved in summer 2010 to a temporary home in the "Residenzhalle" on the site of the former Cambridge Dragoons barracks , as the theater and a wing of the palace were being converted. This should stop the building fabric from sagging. The interior should also be based on the original Baroque style and elements that changed from the last comprehensive renovation in 1935 were omitted. The studio program of the former painters' hall was shown in the small residential hall of the Cambridge Dragoons barracks. One of the two rehearsal stages was converted for this venue. There was space for 60 spectators. The residence hall offered artistic possibilities, because here the stage space could be used as a classic peep box, as an arena or as a catwalk. The Residenzhalle was inaugurated on September 24, 2010 with "Die Nibelungen" by Moritz Rinke .

Since the opening premiere on October 12, 2012, performances have been taking place again at a historic location in Celle Castle. After the renovation, a second studio stage was added, the "Turmbühne", which was inaugurated on October 13, 2012 with the world premiere of "A lot of smoke and a little heap of ash" by Ralf-Günter Krolkiewicz. Today the Schlosstheater Celle has two studio stages in the castle (painter's hall and tower stage with 40 seats each) and Hall 19 on the grounds of the CD barracks on Hannoversche Heerstraße (known as the "Residenzhalle" during the renovation phase). In summer the open-air summer theater takes place in the courtyard of the palace. When Andreas Döring began as artistic director, theater operations were switched from en suite to repertoire and the children's and youth theater program was significantly expanded. Well over 20 premieres are brought to the stage by the permanent ensemble and guests each season.
