history

A mansion at this location is first attested to in 1466. At that time, this estate belonged to the Gilsen family and was therefore called Gilsenhof. In the 18th century the building got its present appearance. Major Hermann Johann von Benckendorff acquired the building in 1784 and had a main house built in the classicist style in 1790. From 1816 the property belonged to world explorer Adam Johann von Krusenstern . The mansion remained in the family's possession until the beginning of the 20th century. The last private owner was Alfred von Uexküll-Gyldenband. The castle has been a school since 1920. From 2008 to 2010 the castle was restored.
