Ass Castle, also called Gilsenhof

The village has 261 inhabitants.

The manor house of Kiltsi ( German Schloss Ass or Gilsenhof ) was one of the most famous manors in Wierland ( Virumaa ).

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1466. A vassal castle stood there in the 16th century. It was owned by the German Baltic von Gilsen family. The small castle without an inner courtyard was destroyed during the Livonian War in February 1588.

In 1784 Major Hermann Johann von Benckendorff acquired the property. In 1790 he had a new manor house built in the late Baroque style on the old ruins . On the gable triangle the text can be read: “Built in 1292 and renovated in 1790”. Between 1801 and 1846 the estate belonged to the explorer Adam Johann von Krusenstern , who died there.

A school has been located in the building since 1920. It also houses a small museum on the life and work of Adam Johann von Krusenstern.
