Castle Belgershain is from a medieval castle complex product derived Castle in the town of Belgershain in the district of Leipzig . The castle was owned by various noble families until 1945 and today serves as the town's cultural center.

history

Belgershain Castle goes in its basics on a 11/12. It was built in the 15th century and was surrounded by a moat and served to protect the Via Regia Lusatiae Superioris trade route passing nearby . It was created after 1104 on behalf of Margrave Wiprecht von Groitzsch . In 1330 this castle was owned by Heinrich von Trebsen. Later the castle and Vorwerk belonged to the Burgraves of Leisnig and the von Pflugk family, among others . From 1551 Belgershain was the seat of a manor and owned by changing noble families. By 1600 the conversion of the castle complex into a residential palace was essentially complete.

The interior was given its shape in the 17th century. A spiral staircase and a hall with cross vaults behind it are remarkable. The door frames made of porphyry also show some Renaissance shapes. In 1792 the von Uechteritz family bought the castle and had the building rebuilt in neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 19th century . In 1833 Friedrich von Zehmen followed as the new owner. From 1852 Belgershain Castle was owned by the von Schönburg-Waldenburg family . The last owner was Prince Günther von Schönburg-Waldenburg (1887–1960), who rented the Belgershain Castle until 1945.

In 1945, Belgershain Castle was expropriated as part of the land reform, inhabited by refugees and should be demolished according to the SMAD order No. 209 by decision of the district council. The local council successfully objected to this and used the building from 1950 to 1973 as a central school or a polytechnic high school. From 2002 onwards, extensive renovation work was carried out on the castle and castle moat. Today, Belgershain Castle serves as the town's cultural center. a. used by a youth club, the after-school care center (house 2), registry office and various associations.

The castle grounds also include an estate outside the moat ring (today the after-school care facility, House 1 and day care center "Schlossgeister") from the 17th century and the baroque cavalier's house built around 1730 next to the castle. Originally this was connected to the castle by an archway with a transition. Today it is used as the town hall of the municipality. On the upper floor there is a local museum about the local and castle history.
