Campagne Castle

The Campagne castle is located near the Vézère in the village of Campagne in the Dordogne department of the French Périgord .

Campagne Castle stands in the middle of a large park at the foot of a limestone cliff . The first building was erected on this site in the 12th century, but the current building complex dates back to the 14th century. Since then, all eras have left their architectural features, right down to the neo-Gothic components from the 19th century. The main wing with large windows and a roof in the style of the Renaissance is framed by a pavilion with a high roof and a trapezoidal extension flanked by round towers with machicolations , porticoes , battlements and a slate-roofed dome.

In the 14th century, Jean de Beaufort acquired the property in the Archdiocese of Bordeaux . During the Hundred Years War , supporters of England and the King of France fought over the property. Around 1650 Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, vicomte de Turenne , at that time a member of the Fronde , stopped here. Castle Campagne finally came to a Limeuil, who sold it as a joint seigneurie to Jean Bonald and Adhemar Laborie. The latter founded the branch of the Laborie-Campagne family. The last Marquis de Campagne bequeathed the castle to the state in 1970. It cannot be visited.
