The facility is located on a steep bank above the Oder . It was built on the site of a 14th century hunting lodge. Franz von Rechenberg replaced the previous wooden structure with a stone castle in the 16th century.

The Schoenaich family had owned the complex and the associated lands since 1560 . This made Carolath the center of her free class rule, which was elevated to a principality in the 18th century. The castle became the residence of the respective prince.

Fabian von Schoenaich expanded the castle complex . In 1597 the castle was badly damaged by lightning. Georg von Schoenaich had the facility rebuilt. The gatehouse from 1611 was built on two floors. A chapel dates from 1618. A large castle courtyard was laid out. In the 19th century, a riding school, a brewery, the court commission building, the theater and the stables were grouped around a second courtyard.

The actual palace was built between 1597 and 1618 in two phases. This older part of the castle extends from north to south and was two-story. On the south side there was a stepping hall building. The building is considered one of the most important Renaissance style castles in Silesia.

More wings were built in 1769. In 1866 the palace was redesigned by the architect Carl Lüdecke . In 1912 a mausoleum for Wanda von Schoenaich based on a design by Hans Poelzig was built on Schlossplatz . After the fire, which was started by Red Army soldiers in 1945/46 , clearing work was carried out in the 1960s and the gatehouse and castle chapel were restored.
