Drasendorf Castle (2006)

Drasendorf Castle , also known as Gut Grub or Wuchererschlössl , is a listed building in the town of the same name in the municipality of St. Georgen am Längsee in Carinthia .

Geographical location

The castle is also the historical center of the village of Drasendorf (2011: 227 inhabitants) and is slightly elevated above the eastern shore of the Längsee , about two kilometers northeast of the main town of St. Georgen.

history

The estate and the surrounding area were owned by the nearby Benedictine convent of St. Georgen from at least the 13th century until 1782 . The oldest documented mention of the place comes from the year 1152, that of the building as "Dreisindorf" from the time between 1162 and 1181. Drasendorf was given to a noble family as a fief that was named after the manor. Towards the end of the 13th century Ulrich von Dressendorf was named, shortly afterwards a Gunther and Niklas. Apparently the family died out at the beginning of the 14th century; there is no documented evidence of the direct successor. Hans the Usurer von Drassendorf is documented as resident on the property for the year 1402. 1454 awarded Emperor Friedrich III. Erasmus usurers and his seat in Drassendorf own castle tower . This family was owned by Drassendorf until the beginning of the 17th century, but in the course of the Counter Reformation several Protestant family members had to emigrate to Augsburg. The branch of the family that remained Catholic died out in Carinthia around 1860, but the name "Wuchererschlössl" for Drasendorf Castle has remained popular to this day.

After the Abbey of St. Georgen was abolished, the monastery building and Drasendorf Castle were auctioned off in 1788 to the industrialist Max Thaddäus Egger , who had the buildings restored. After the von Egger family died out, Otto Slavik took over the property in 1920, and the Werginz family has owned the castle since 1941 and runs an agricultural business here.

Building description

Drasendorf Castle consists of a two-storey building and the older, slightly higher, three-storey residential tower, which was built by the Wucherer family shortly after 1400 and has only been changed insignificantly since then. On the north side of the almost square tower, which has a steep hipped roof, is the ogival entrance gate, which, like the cross fascia above, is dated to the early 15th century. Coupled twin windows on the west side of the roof zone point to the Renaissance period.

The arched gate and the windows of the lower residential and farm building, which was added in the 16th century, are framed with sgraffito paintings .

Nothing can be seen of the former fortifications such as the outer walls and ditches around the property.
