Ferlach Castle (2011)

Ferlach Castle is a former manor house. It is located on the southwest edge of the core town of Ferlach in Carinthia . It was built in the 16th century and further expanded around 1780. The listed building has 2 ½ storeys and has been used as a museum since 1998.

history

The building was erected in the first half of the 16th century as a simple hall- storey house. The builder is unknown, presumably it was the first owner of Ferlacher Hammerwerke Thomas Tifrer or the Locatelli family. In 1692 it was acquired by the Huebmershoffen family, who from 1738 called themselves “von Silbernagl”. Ignaz Freiherr von Silbernagl had the building increased in its present form in 1780 and redesigned into a late baroque noble seat. In order to avoid confusion with the nearby Wildenberg Castle, Ferlach Castle was also called "Lower Castle".

The Silbernagl family remained in possession of the castle until 1874. Then, for financial reasons, she had to sell her hammer mills and the mansion to the Paul Mühlbacher trades. His nephew Gustav Voigt joined the company in 1879 and took over the castle. The Voigt family remained the castle owners for 78 years until the property was sold to KESTAG-Stahlwerke on July 25, 1957. These were taken over by the company Voest-Alpine Steinel. In 1991, the town of Ferlach bought the residence with federal and state funds and, a little later, the neighboring administration building, which used to be the stables of the Mühlbachers.

Todays use

The building has been restored and modernized for the Carinthian state exhibition "Alles hagd ... a cultural history" in 1997 under the direction of the architect Josef Klingbacher. In order to create space for the state exhibition, the main building was connected to the neighboring, former administration building by a glass structure.

In the following year the gunsmith museum moved from the Ferlach town hall to the castle. From 2001 the museum's holdings were expanded to include the “Hunting Myth - Horten Collection”. In addition to the museum, the castle houses the city library, a café as well as various offices and event rooms. The palace park is used for artistic activities.
