Graefenhainichen Castle is a listed building in the town of Graefenhainichen in the district of Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments , the castle is listed as a monument under registration number 094 40240 .

history

The castle was built in the 12th or 13th century on the ruins of an older castle complex by the Prince of Anhalt and was mentioned in a document in 1325. In the 14th century, the castle was owned by the von Schlichting family and later owned by the Margrave of Meißen , who often leased it. In 1558 Heinrich von Geiselthal bought the castle for 1,500 thalers and expanded it. In the 17th century it was then in the possession of the Lords of Müelte . During the Thirty Years' War in 1637, the town was sacked by Swedish troops, the town of Graefenhainichen was completely destroyed and the castle was destroyed by fire except for a few walls. After that, the castle was not rebuilt, so that today only the remains of the wall are preserved. Today (2019) there is an open-air stage for concerts and other events on the grounds of the castle ruins.

General and location

The castle ruins are located south of Schlossstrasse. In the west and south is the Gräfenhainicher Mühlengraben , which is also a listed building . The former Vorwerk and later Kammergut Strohwalde belonged to the lands of the castle .

The remains on which the castle was built are considered a ground monument .
