Hamel Castle
The Hamel Castle is a castle in Castets-en-Dorthe , a district of the French community Castets et Castillon in the Gironde department in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It was originally built in 1313/14 and rebuilt at the end of the 17th century. The castle has been classified as a monument historique since 1963 .
history
The lords of Castets-en-Dorthe have been handed down since the 12th century. The English King Edward II allowed the construction of the castle, which was captured by French troops in 1327. During the Hundred Years' War it was retaken by the English in 1442.
In 1572 Jean de Fabas, lord of Arès and Castet, became the owner of the castle. As a Protestant, he took part in the Huguenot Wars and had the castle expanded as a fortress. The facility was besieged and destroyed in the clashes.
From 1697 onwards, the new owner Charles du Hamel rebuilt it, including the eastern donjon of the old castle. The new U-shaped building is closed on the fourth side by the former horse stables.
