Hammerstein Castle (Albig)

Remains of the Villa Rustica

Hammerstein Castle is the historical name of the remains of the foundation wall in Albig , a local community in Rheinhessen , Rhineland-Palatinate . The remains of the walls are 500 m east of the outskirts, below the source of the Sumborn stream .

The name “Schloss Hammerstein” came about when the foundation walls of an old building were found on the hill in front of Albig. At first one inferred from this the earlier existence of a medieval castle , which was baptized "Schloss Hammerstein". The area on which the foundation walls are located is also called Hammerstein. Only later, after a large number of shards of vessels and bricks as well as coins had been found, did the ruin turn out to be a Roman villa rustica . Among other things, there was a coin find with Marcus Aurelius (180 AD). It was probably destroyed around the year 400 when the Alemanni advanced.

The castle is the namesake for an Albiger single location .
