Karlštejn Castle

The Karlštejn Castle (German Karl Stein ) is a hunting lodge in the Rococo style. The three-wing, single-storey complex with a saddle mansard roof is located in the Karlštejn district of the municipality of Svratouch in Okres Chrudim in the Czech Republic .

geography

The castle is located two kilometers east of Svratka on a 783 m high ridge in the north of the Saar mountains . Because of its location on the main European watershed between the Elbe and the Danube , the castle is also known as the “roof of Europe”. The Bubnovaný kopec (780 m) rises to the east. To the southeast are the sources Hraběnčina studánka and Knížecí studánka, behind is the Zkamenělý zámek (775 m). A straight maple avenue leads from the castle through the former deer garden to the northeast to Ruda .

history

In 1708 Franziska Rosalie Beatrix Berka von Dubá , the wife of the owner of the Richenburg estate , Wilhelm Leopold Count Kinský, had a St. Create a chapel consecrated to Aegidius. Between 1767 and 1776, on behalf of Count Philipp Kinský, a hunting lodge was built next to the chapel, which was surrounded by a deer garden. After Karl Alexander von Thurn und Taxis bought Richenburg in 1823, the castle was primarily used as the seat of the forest administration for the surrounding forests. After the end of the Second World War, the property of the Princes of Thurn und Taxis was confiscated and nationalized. After that, the castle was used for recreational purposes. The owner was subsequently TJ Spartak Svratka. During this time the desolate roofs were repaired. A planned use as a tourist hostel and gallery failed due to a lack of funds. The chateau subsequently belonged to the Kras Brno factories and, since the 1960s, to the Prostějov textile works . After the Velvet Revolution, the object remained with the legal successor, OP Prostějov, who wants to sell it.
