Gut Katholm has been attested as a farm since the 15th century. In 1545 the first manor house was built. The castle was built in the Renaissance style in 1588–1591 and in 1622 a lower west wing was added. Because Palle Krag and his wife died childless, Major General Poul Rosenørn bought Katholm on a campaign in 1724 for 21,200 Reichstaler - the low price is explained by the poor contemporary conditions for agriculture. The castle remained until 1802 in the possession of the letter noble family Rosenorn when Mathias Peter Otte Rosenorn it for 127,000 Reichstaler Jens Jørgensen, who was previously for many years lessee of goods sold.

The Katholm estate is 1170 hectares in size and is used for agriculture. The public has access to the castle outside the moat. The "Hulvej" leading from the castle to Grenaa consists of a narrow low-lying road where buses and trucks were once stuck between the old beech trees. The traces left on the tree bark give the ravine its character.
