Kattau Castle (Lower Austria)
Katau Castle

Kattau Castle is located in Meiseldorf in Lower Austria .

history

The current castle was probably built in the middle of the 14th century. It was first mentioned in 1343. In the 15th century it was occupied by the Hungarians under Matthias Corvinus . Emperor Friedrich III. won the building back and his son Maximilian I enfeoffed Heinrich Prüschenk von Stettenberg with the rule in 1497. In the first half of the 17th century, it was probably converted into a moated castle. A mention in 1644 describes it as newly built. From 1669 to 1827, the owners at that time, the Barons von Gilleis , redesigned the palace in Baroque style. Other owners were Josef von Hempel from 1832 to 1839 , as well as the gentlemen von Neuhaus and the Geymüller family. After the Second World War, due to the desolate condition of the building, consideration was given to demolition, but partial renovations were carried out. Kattau Castle is still the center of the estate and belongs to the Hiller family.

The castle is a four-wing, three-storey complex around a rectangular courtyard, which is flanked on three sides by squat corner towers. The west wing has collapsed.

garden

The walled baroque garden was laid out in the third quarter of the 18th century. In 1823 it was converted into an English park, in which there are still several old trees today.
