history

In the 17th century, the pastory of the immediately adjacent Lamberti Church was located on the site of the current building . In 1646 it moved to a building at the end of the street. On September 17th of that year , Count Ulrich II established a three-class Latin school for boys in the old headquarters . The church authorities took over the supervision and administration of the educational institution. This Schola Ulriciana is the nucleus of today's Gymnasium Ulricianum . In the 19th century the old building no longer met the needs of the school, so it had to give way to a new building. The building, which is still preserved today, was built on the same site from 1820 onwards. The foundation stone was laid on May 31 of that year. Two years later, the Ulricianum moved into the new rooms and used them for almost a hundred years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the space available for the grammar school was no longer sufficient, so that it moved into the new building on von-Jhering-Strasse, which is still in use today. In 1908, the last Abitur exam was held on Schulstrasse. The building then served as the seat of the Evangelical Reformed Church in Northwest Germany from 1908 to 1955 . In the 1950s, the church administration moved from Aurich to Leer because of the better transport connections (rail connection) . The building in Aurich was then occupied by the regional administrative court and the state building department, which used it jointly from 1955 to 1965. The State Building Department has been the sole user since 1965.
