history

The first documentary mention of the place comes from a document of Prince Spytihněv II from the year 1057. At the place of today's Schönpriesen Castle there used to be a castle. Around 1600 Rudolf von Bünau had a renaissance castle built, the master builder was Hans Boge, a stonemason from Pirna . The oldest part of the castle is the side wing, which is connected to the castle church of St. Florian by a corridor. On the garden side of the old castle is a sundial with the year 1603 and the Latin address "Soli deo Gloria". The castle church of St. Florian was also built by Hans Boge in the years 1597–1603, it is an example of the Saxon Renaissance in Bohemia with late Gothic tracery, ribbed vaults and portals with diamond blocks . The main altar dates from 1605. At the church there is a small old cemetery with the graves of the previous patrons.

After the Battle of the White Mountain , the Counts of Bünau went back to Saxony. The new owners were Counts Thun-Hohenstein (until 1647), then Count von Althan (1680) and Count Cavriani . In 1730 the castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style by Count Ludwig Richard Cavriani. Heinrich Graf von Kolowrat-Krakovský-Novohradský (born 1826 in Neuhaus Jindřichův Hradec , died 1904 in Schönpriesen) acquired the castle in the 19th century .

In the 19th century a new wing with a balcony was added. This so-called new castle has a square floor plan around a central courtyard, in the corners there are cylindrical towers with onion domes. It is two-story and stands on a terrace, the main access is via a staircase from the southwest. Further renovations took place in 1897 and 1926.

After the Kolowrats, Count Jan Skrbenský z Hříště (* 1868), married to Malvína von Kolowrat (1873-1932), took over the rule of Schönpriesen. The Counts of Skrbenský lived in the castle until it was expropriated in 1945. After that, it was the official seat of the Czech State Railways CSD . The surrounding park used to have a number of garden buildings and was greatly altered in the 20th century with the construction of a road. The chateau is currently owned by the Ústí nad Labem City Monument Protection Agency, which has had its seat here since 2011.
