The castle was classified as a Monument historique on January 21, 1946 and thus placed under monument protection. description

Surrounded by water, the castle lies on a rectangle. The castle consists of a building complex with a main building in the northern part and two parallel rectangular outbuildings, each with an overhanging corner tower, which frame a courtyard. In the center of the main house is a square tower, which is flanked to the east by two round towers. From this main entrance to the castle, a road leads east across the lake to a gate. A gallery leads from the narrower round towers of the main tower to the south to a large round tower. Another building from the 18th century adjoins the main tower in the west.

history

La Clayette Castle was the center of one of the largest estates in the region from the 14th century until the French Revolution. In 1380, Philibert de Lespinasse transformed an existing fortification, which was used to collect customs, into a castle with round towers. In 1420 the castle of Louis de Chantemerle fell , whose family belonged to the entourage of the Dukes of Burgundy. On August 2, 1524, Francis I , the Knight King , on his way to Lyon , spent a night in the castle.

In 1632, with the death of Alice-Éléonore de Chantemerle, ownership fell to her husband Paul de Damas and thus to the House of Damas. In 1703, with the death of Jean-Léonard de Damas, the Palatine de Dyo inherited the property. In the following years, the castle changed hands several times. On November 4, 1722, Bernard de Noblet acquired La Clayette for 160,000 livres and 1,800 bottles of wine. Bernard de Noblet became Baron von Clayette and Baron von Tremont. In 1736 La Clayette was made a county and from then on the castle remained in the possession of the same family.
