The lock-down essence lies on the southern bank of the Danube in the district Wesenufer the community Waldkirchen am Wesen in the district of Schärding .

history

Most of the castle dates from the 17th century, but some components are from 1890, when the castle was rebuilt after a fire. Nothing is known about the original builder of the castle himself. However, today's castle ruins Wesen and the decrepit Burgstall Oberwesen in the possession of the Lords of Wesen were mentioned in a document. In 1322 their property came to the Waldecker. Hadamar von Waldeck bequeathed Wesen Castle to the Passau Monastery in 1325 as a perpetual measuring foundation for himself and his family. The relationship between the castle essence and the castle have not been clarified. In 1803 the property came into public hands during the secularization , and in 1824 the castle was auctioned.

Later the Niklas brewery was located in the castle, which was taken over in 1938 by the Baumgartner brewery , which has its headquarters in Schärdung. The Baumgartner brewery initially continued to operate the site, but in 1975 the brewery in Wesenufer came to an end, and in 1993 the production of lemonade there was also discontinued.

Niederwesen Castle today

In the years 2006 to 2008 extensive adaptations were made in order to be able to continue using the castle complex. Today the association pro mente Upper Austria operates a psychosocial care facility , a seminar hotel and a small market shop here. The facility is known today as Wesenufer: Seminar culture on the Danube .

From the inner courtyard, two-story Tuscan arcades from the 17th century can be seen on the left. The bay window and the entire upper floor of the main building accommodate the rooms of the seminar hotel. Parts of a restaurant are housed in the winter garden attached to the two-storey, groin-vaulted arcade. A new wing connects the main building with the brewhouse, which dates back to the brewery's use and whose brick-walled double chimney is still reminiscent of that phase. The roof skin, facade and inner shell of the respective wing could be restored according to the traditional appearance. The wooden box windows were partially supplemented and revised. The historic wooden flooring was retained. Inside and outside, only lime plastering technology and sump lime coloring were used. The renovation of Niederwesen Castle was named Monument of the Month by the Federal Monuments Office.

The event rooms of the castle are also available to the community of Waldkirchen am Wesen as a cultural and event location.
