Nimritz Castle

Nimritz Castle is a historic building in Nimritz in the Thuringian Saale-Orla district .

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1074. At first the building was a water castle with a rectangular floor plan and an entrance on the south side of the building. The moat existed until 1870; a stream still exists today.

The noble family von Etzdorff converted the building into a Renaissance castle between 1565 and 1569 . At that time the northern stair tower and the northwest bay were built. The von Bünau family bought the castle around 1600 and carried out renovations. In 1773 the von Beust bought the building. The last owner of the family was Major Joachim von Beust until 1945.

There was no destruction in World War II. Nevertheless, part of the building was demolished in 1946. In autumn 1947, the then Soviet occupying power issued SMAD order No. 209 to demolish aristocratic residences, the consequences of which the castle was able to avoid. Today the castle is privately owned and cannot be visited. The Thuringian Monument Protection Prize was awarded in 2006 for the renovation of the building .
