Oberrain Castle

Oberrain Castle (formerly also called Seidlgut ) is located in the municipality of Unken in the Zell am See district in the state of Salzburg (Unken 8). The castle-like building is located on a hill above the Saalach valley .

history

Around 1400 the Seidlgut and the actual tavern were two buildings, whereby the hospitality license was first on the Seidlgut and was only later transferred to the tavern. The property was under the rule of the Archbishop of Salzburg until 1848 . Stephan Seydl and his wife Margareth and then their son Leonhard appear to be the first owners between 1400 and 1500, after which it came to his daughter Margareth, married to Peter Teysteter. Further owners were: Konrad Kramer, Christian Seydl and his son and grandson Johannes, in 1544 his daughters Ursula and Barbara with Sebastian Widmann and in 1546/47 the sons Johann and Mathias. In 1564 Georg Entgruber is the owner of the property. He sold the tavern to Christian Wöhrminger and Veronika Dötlinger in 1575. He sold the Seidlgut to Stephan Unterhager at the end of the same year. His successor Konrad Leyrer, landlord to Unken, reunited the property. Then came Salome Leyrer and Paul Wäggerl, their son Hans Leyrer in 1591, and his sister Katharina Leyrer and Matheus Metzger in 1634. The property stayed with this family for about 200 years.

In 1890 the property was sold to Johann Mayergschwenter and Johann Stainer. Just six months later, the German fertilizer manufacturer Hermann Schmidtmann is the owner of the farm and the tavern, which has been expanded to include a bathing establishment. He gave the building its current appearance. In 1923 his daughter Florence von Poser inherited the business, but was very much in debt. In 1940 the NS-Volkswohlfahrt took over the castle and converted it into a convalescent home for mothers. After the end of the war, the headquarters of the 101st US Parachute Division moved into Oberrain Castle for a short time.

Oberrain Castle today

After the property was returned to Florence von Poser, the Salzburg state government acquired it in 1956. First a children's rest home was housed here. Since 1960, Oberrain has been run by the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Rehabilitation”, which prepares young people with disabilities for a professional and private life that is as independent as possible. Today this institution is run by "anderskompetent GmbH" for people with disabilities.

The former farm has been abandoned and only the tavern building, which was redesigned in 1891, is left. Until 1830 the main road ran between the farm and the tavern. The main building is three-story and covered with a hipped roof. The south facade is structured by a tower two window axes wide. On the top floor is an open loggia , a double arch with a central column. The windows are decorated with stucco ornaments that vary in layers. The building is structured by a band. On the north side a terrace leads into a garden. Above the entrance portal is the state coat of arms and the year 1796 with the following slogan: I have now been built, but soon I could fall apart when wild lightning looms and thunder and storms pop, but that I will stay safe from all accidents, I will choose you, O God, for my protection.
