history

Puymartin Castle was originally built by the Abbots of Sarlat in the mid-13th century. Around 1270 it became the property of the Serviens family. In 1357, during the Hundred Years War, English mercenaries conquered the castle and only withdrew after paying a large ransom, but not without razing it beforehand.

In 1450 Radulphe de Saint-Clar bought back the abandoned property and began to rebuild and expand. In the 16th century the castle was the headquarters of his grandson Raymond de Saint-Clar , leader of the Catholics of the Perigord noir , in his victorious battle against the Protestants.

A decade-long dispute over property rights between Suzanne de Saint-Clare and her brother Jean ended in Suzanne's favor. Under Louis XIV , the La Pleinie family owned the castle, and in the period after that, François Roffignac de Carbonnier de Marzac . The seigneur was imprisoned during the French Revolution and the building was left to its own devices. Shortly before the end of the 19th century, the Marquis Marc de Carbonnier de Marzac had the castle restored and partially rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. His only daughter married Count Jacques de Montbron , father of the current owner, Henri de Montbron .

There is the horror story of a “ White Lady ” haunting the rooms at midnight . This goes back to Thérèse de Saint-Clar . She was the wife of Jean de Saint-Clar , Seigneur of the Puymartin Castle in the 16th century, and was surprised by her husband in the arms of her lover. The betrayed husband retaliated by holding her captive for 15 years and bricking up the room after her death.
