history

The castle at that time belonged to the royal domain and was sold by King Francis I to Jean II. De Raval from Tourlaville. He had a Renaissance castle built in 1562, only parts of the keep remained. After financial problems, the Lords of Raval sold the castle to Charles de Franquetot in 1653, who had the interior renovated in particular . After his murder, the complex had several owners, including the Boudets from Crosville and the Fouquets from Reville. In 1661 it was used as a farm.

Clérel Hervé de Tocqueville took possession of it in 1777. His grandson René de Tocqueville, Lord Mayor of the city, arranged for the buildings and gardens to be renovated and built a large greenhouse. However, in 1906 he had to sell it. During the First World War the buildings were used as a hospital. As early as 1930, the castle was listed as a monument historique in the catalog. The city of Cherbourg acquired the property in 1935. It was occupied by the German army during World War II and by American troops after it was liberated.

While the park is open to the public all year round, the castle can only be visited during the Open Heritage Days (Journées du patrimoine). The park and greenhouse, together with the palace, have been a listed building since March 1996 .

park

The renaissance park with moats was provided with two ponds and a cave in 1870. There are many exotic plants and trees in the park and in the greenhouse, which was redesigned between 1872 and 1875. The park was declared a public garden by the city of Cherbourg in 1935. A storm in 1987 caused great damage.
