The Sandbjerg Castle (German: Sandberg) is the mansion of a former nobleman Guts on the peninsula Sundewitt in today's Denmark . The castle is located a few kilometers northwest of Sønderborg directly on the Alsensund .

historical overview

The estate was first mentioned around 1500. The estate was founded around 1564 by Duke Johann von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg . It remained in the possession of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburger lines for almost a century , then after the bankruptcy of the ducal house in 1667 it was withdrawn by the Danish crown. In 1673 it was sold to the Reventlow family , who belonged to Sandbjerg until 1930. During the German-Danish War in 1864 the castle was used as accommodation for Prussian troops, so it was fired from the Danish entrenchments [March 1864]. In 1930 it was sold to the Dahl family, who donated the property to Aarhus University in 1954 . The mansion and the outbuildings are used by the university as a seminar center.

The manor house was built in its current form around 1788. Its design, with the facades structured by pilaster strips and the strong coloring, is influenced by the not far away Augustenborg Castle . In the interior, the furnishings from the Rococo period have been preserved. Since the building is used for university operations, it is usually not open to visitors. However, the landscaped garden around the castle is accessible.
