The Als Sund ( German  Alsensund ) is a strait about eight kilometers long and about 500 m wide in Northern Schleswig and in Sønderjylland ( Southern Jutland ) in southern Denmark . It connects the Als Fjord with the outer Flensburg Fjord and separates the island of Als from the Sundeved peninsula . The northern part runs from the transition from Als Fjord to Augustenborg Fjord exactly in a north-south direction. South of the Alssundbroen , the sound swings slightly to the east and opens into Sønderborg Bugt , a side bay of the Flensburg Fjord.

places

The largest town on Als Sund is Sønderborg , whose castle used to control the entrance to the sund. Like the castle, the old town is located on Als, but Sønderborg has long since expanded to the west bank of the sound, where the train station and the university facilities are located. The only inner-city connection is the Kong Christian den X's Bro bascule bridge built in 1930 over the sound. The Alssundbroen lies in the course of the trunk road 8 and is not far north of the city.

North of Sønderborg is the Arnkiel peninsula between Sund and Augustenborger Fjord. Here the Prussian troops succeeded in the war of 1864 on June 29th, the passage from Sottrupskov over the Als Sund, which brought the final decision.

Across from Arnkiel is the traditional Sandbjerg Castle in the parish of Sottrup Sogn (German: Satrup ). Today it is a conference venue owned by the University of Aarhus .

Between Ballebro in the parish of Ullerup Sogn and Hardeshoi in the municipality of Oksbøl Sogn ( German  Oxbüll ) there is the only ferry connection across the sound, which is especially important for Nordborg . A motorway (No. 8 = Sønderborgmotorvejen) has been in operation from the E45 to Sønderborg since 2014.
