Sandemar Castle
Sandemar Castle is located on the Baltic coast in the Swedish municipality of Haninge in the historic province of Södermanland .
The construction
The original main building is made of wood clad with brick panels, with the sea side also having sheet metal cladding to protect against the sea winds. The current manor house dates from around 1690 and has retained its old characteristics, as it was spared during the Russian attack on Södermanland in 1719. Inside there are richly decorated tapestries and tapestries and the garden is kept in the French style with correctly cut hedges and pyramid-shaped fir trees. Later an English park was added with a greenhouse, useful plants and fruit trees. The architect is unknown, but the building is reminiscent of the style of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder .
history
During the Kalmar Union , Gut Sandemar belonged to the Teutonic Order of Livonia . It later became the property of the Imperial Councilor Erik Axelsson Tott , who in 1467 probably bought all of the order's lands in what is now Sweden. The ownership structure in the 16th century is not known and in the following century the castle belonged alternately to the noble families Oxenstierna , Bonde and Falkenberg. It is believed that the royal councilor Gabriel Falkenberg, who became Count Falkenberg af Sandemar in 1693, had the building constructed in the 1690s. In 1738 the district judge Carl Wattrang bought the castle, who had it declared a family fideikommiss . When this status was revoked in 1964, the way was clear for another sale, and in 2006 the property was transferred to a private individual.

Surroundings
The area around the castle is characterized by a great diversity of species. Noteworthy are the rare orchid species, swamp and elder orchid ( Dactylorhiza sambucina ) as well as the chess flower . The varied nature also offers good conditions for an extensive bird population. Resting migratory birds on the meadow and the nearby bay attract many bird watchers in spring and autumn. In 1997 the "Sandemar Nature Reserve" was created.
