history

Spitzberg Castle after an engraving by Michael Wening from 1721

The time when Spitzberg Castle was built is uncertain. In 1388, Spitzenberg is mentioned as the ancestral seat of the Mauerkirchner. In 1481 the Granser owned the castle. Then Friedrich Mauerkircher, Chancellor of Duke Georg von Bayern-Landshut and later Bishop of Passau, received Spitzenberg as a fief in 1479. This had Spitzberg fortified with a curtain wall and added a new heel. After his death on November 28, 1485, his nephew and heir Wolfgang named himself after Spitzenberg. When he died in 1503, the property came to his stepbrother Stephan Wäninger (Wanninger). In the Palatinate War of Succession , Spitzenberg was occupied in 1504. His grandson Stefan Wäninger vom Spitzenberg sold the castle to his brother-in-law Joachim Rainer zu Laufenbach in 1588. This in turn sold Spitzenberg around 1590 to Wolf Josef Hochkircher von Ysselsdorf. In 1616 Pankraz von Freiberg zu Hochaschnau acquired the castle from his brother-in-law Wolf Josef Höhenkirchner. Baron Adam Kaspar Freiherr von Freyberg zu Hohenaschau had the castle rebuilt from scratch in 1700. The Freibergs remained in the possession of Spitzenberg until 1750. Then Franz Peter von Rosenbusch, Bavarian treasurer, privy councilor and auditor, acquired the property. From 1812 the Counts Lerchenberg were on Spitzenberg. This was followed by the Neweklowsky from Freistadt. In 1829 Phillipp Freiherr von Venningen, already owner of Aspach Castle , bought Spitzenberg Castle. At the end of the 19th century, Friedrich Bergmüller († 1884), mayor and member of the Reichstag, owned the Spitzenberg Palace. At the turn of the 20th century, the castle came into rural possession.

Spitzberg Castle today

The name of the castle comes from its location on top of a small mountain. The rocky foothills are clad with ashlar stones. The driveway leads to the right of the steep slope to a gate tower and then to the front courtyard. Here is a hook-shaped building, behind it is an elongated Maierhof. In the courtyard wing there are arcades with z. T. handsome marble columns. After the great fire of 1865, the castle was only rebuilt in 1917.

Spitzenberg makes a somewhat unkempt and run-down impression. The building parts of the castle are used by its owner Franz Dachs both as a farm and as a rental house.
