Staudachhof Castle (also Gut Weilern ) is a listed building in the Rotte of the same name in the Carinthian Metnitztal , which today belongs to the municipality of Friesach .

history

Staudach means as much as thicket or scrub, but the original name of the group of houses in the Metnitztal was "Weiler (n)" and was first mentioned in 1107 as Wilar when Acica, the widow of Margrave Burkhard of Istria, gave this place to her daughter. Soon after, ownership passed to the Counts of Spanheim , who then donated it to St. Lambrecht Abbey . His followers, who managed the estate, called themselves Lords von Wilaren (first documented mention in 1136 and 1251). From 1315 onwards, the Gurk Ministeriale Hermann von Staudach was the owner of the site, which was given its current name through his family. The Staudachers had a lizard in their coat of arms, a coat of arms stone of Andrä Staudach is in the church in the neighboring village of Grades , one of Marx von Staudach from 1544 in the Friesach Dominican Church . The castle was acquired in 1596 by the Murau tradesman Christoph Schmelzer. The Aichelburgers succeeded the smelters as owners, from 1786 on the owners changed in quick succession. In 1856 Gustav Graf von Egger was lord of the castle, in 1869 the Staudachhof belonged to the Hüttenberger Eisenwerkgesellschaft. After that, it became farm property, where the property is still located today.

Building description

Staudachhof Castle is opposite the Staudachhof branch church . It is a massive, three-storey building with a rectangular floor plan that was erected in the second half of the 16th century. In the diagonal, strongly protruding square towers are attached to the northeast and southwest corners. Most of the originally Gothic windows were enlarged in the 20th century and changed to a landscape format; only the windows on the second floor are still smaller.
