Steegen Castle

The Castle Steegen is located in the municipality of Steegen in Grieskirchen in Hausruckviertel of Upper Austria.

history

The Edelgut zu Steegen is mentioned in a chronicle as early as the eleventh century. Steegen Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1371. At that time, the owners were the Hieber; How these came into the possession of Steegen is unknown. What is known, however, is the sale in 1696 by Johann Achaz Hieber to Count Heinrich Johann von Strattmann. When he died, he had no children entitled to inheritance and so Steegen fell to the Strattmann line of Peuerbach. After the dissolution of the Peuerbach Fideikommiss in 1825, Steegen was broken out of the property complex and was freely sold. From 1826 to 1930 Steegen was owned by the Eisterer family. The Steegen Castle Brewery was also housed here between 1831 and 1882. The Raiffeisenbank Peuerbach , which was founded in 1923 as the “Steegen Advance Fund Association for the Parish Peuerbach-Land”, was located in Steegen Castle and Brewery until 1928.
