Sundbyholm Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sundbyholm Palace is a magnificent building in the Swedish municipality of Eskilstuna in the historic province of Södermanland . It is located on a headland by Lake Mälaren .

In the Middle Ages , Sundbyholm Manor was owned by the Johanniterkloster in Eskilstuna . In 1527 the castle was withdrawn from the crown. In 1629 Field Marshal Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm had a school set up in the castle at his own expense, which is considered Sweden's first elementary school . The school operated until 1987. Under Imperial Treasurer Seved Bååth, the castle was given three additional floors.

From the early 18th century, the castle often changed between the different administrators. It was damaged in a fire on Christmas Eve 1774. Gustav August Coyet, who bought an additional 100 hectares of land and laid out a park and avenues, made special contributions to the expansion of the estate. In 1819 Baron Salomon Löfvensköld took over the estate, who had a mansion-like building built in place of the castle, which had fallen into disrepair. In the 1890s, Prince Eugen depicted the castle in his painting "The Old Castle". The changes of ownership continued until the town of Eskilstuna bought the castle in 1939. It was decided to create a conference venue that still exists, albeit privately owned.
