Walbeck Castle

Walbeck Castle , also called Haus Walbeck , is a listed moated castle in Walbeck , a district of the city of Geldern in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It goes back to at least the 14th century.

history

The house was the focus of Walbeck's glory . This was owned by the Nideggen taverns . House Walbeck itself was first mentioned in 1403. Linked to the house and the glory was the nearby Steprath House . In 1452 the glory was divided. The division between the owners of the Walbeck and Steprath houses lasted until the 18th century. After the 16th century, the families of the house changed hands several times. From 1653 onwards those of Bylandt and von Gramey were followed by those of Bönninghausen .

After the Walbeck line died out at the beginning of the 19th century, ownership changed several times, and the complex was used as a residential building at the beginning of the 20th century. In the Second World War slightly damaged, it was dried first for a rest home for miners. From 1955 it was the seat of the Institute for Christian Social Education. In 1980 the owner family sold it to the Christian Youth Villages Association . Walbeck Castle has been listed as number A 62 on the list of historical monuments of the municipality of Geldern since January 28, 1992. A hotel has been located there since 2014.

architecture

The current construction of the main house dates back to the 16th century. Among other things, comparisons with other buildings led to the conclusion that the core of the building dates back to the 14th century.

The current appearance of a Dutch casteel speaks for a later time.

The main house is a four-wing, two-storey brick building of around 25 × 30 m, which is built around a small inner courtyard. The turrets at the corners of the roof foot were previously connected by battlements in the attic. The building has been changed several times over the years. A bailey was rebuilt in the 18th century. After a fire in 1836, the house was rebuilt without one floor.
