asparagus

Sculpture dedicated to asparagus in Walbeck

Walbeck is known nationwide primarily for its asparagus . This attracts many visitors to the village on the left Lower Rhine during the annual asparagus season.

Major Walter Klein-Walbeck made his first attempts at growing asparagus on the lands of the Walbeck manor. It quickly became apparent that the light sandy soil of the Maas - Niers dune , which was washed up millions of years ago, is ideal for growing asparagus. The neighboring farmers followed suit and founded the first and to this day only asparagus cooperative in 1929.

Today vegetables from the Dutch border are available at many weekly markets in almost all of Germany. The harvest quantities are processed on the farms and marketed at the auction in Straelen .

On the last weekend of the asparagus season, the asparagus and village festival takes place on two days in the schoolyard of the local elementary school.

Waldfreibad Walbeck

The Walbeck leisure center was built in the 1970s, including holiday homes, a fitness trail, hiking trails and a large outdoor forest pool with a swimmer's pool, non-swimmer's pool and diving pool, lawns as large as eight soccer fields, a restaurant and, since 2013, the "Tippi Village", in which up to 50 people can sleep in Indian tents. The open-air swimming pool was taken over by the city of Geldern in 2003 by a newly founded spa association. Since then, volunteers have operated and maintained the bathroom and updated the technology. Solar energy is used to heat the pool. The restaurant is also used more and more for club and family celebrations.
