The place was first mentioned in 1294/1295 as 'Virnem'. Vernum formed a congregation and belonged to Nieukerk in terms of church organization. In 1843 Vernum was run as a special community of the mayor of Sevelen with 1,218 inhabitants.

In the 20th century, the independent municipality Vernum consisted of the villages Vernum, Hartefeld and Poelyck . In 1969 the municipality had 830 inhabitants. In the course of the North Rhine-Westphalian community reform, the main part of the community Vernum with the villages Vernum and Hartefeld was incorporated into the city of Geldern on July 1, 1969. The village of Poelyck came to the municipality of Kerken .

Blazon : In green a silver / white bell between three 2: 1 set, with the crossbars pointing towards the bell, silver / white Antony crosses. The coat of arms stands for the chapel built before 1460 in honor of St. Anthony, the green for agriculture. The coat of arms of the municipality of Vernum is used today by both the village of Vernum and the village of Hartefeld.

Agriculture

The village is surrounded by numerous farms. In the fields around Vernum, maize and other grains , but also beets and potatoes are grown.

Monuments and buildings

The oldest building is the Grotelaers house on Duisburger Strasse. The name Grotelaers is mentioned as early as 1294/95, today's house was built as a two-story brick building in 1696 with a high hipped roof and a picturesque chapel tower on the east side by the client Johann Matthias von Afferden. There is a large fireplace at each end of the ridge. Immediately after completion of the house, the building owner received permission from the Roermond bishop to have masses read in the house chapel. A descendant of the client, Johann Josef van Aefferden, sold the house to the Cremeren couple. In October 1818 it was sold by Ludwig Cassian von Salomon. Today it is privately owned. The building was added to the monuments list of the municipality of Geldern on October 15, 1986 under the number A20.

Another attraction in Vernum is the windmill on Poelycker Weg. Today's brick windmill was built in 1866 and replaced a wooden box windmill from 1819. In 1892 the mill was equipped with a steam engine "of 12 horse power". Mill operations were stopped around 1920. The mill then served as a building without a hood or wing as a youth and SA home. Since 1991 it has been wearing a hood and wings again and serves as a residential building. The wind energy gained through the wings serves the monument as heating. The windmill was added to the monuments list of the municipality of Geldern on December 5, 1985 under the number A 16.

The following buildings are also on the list of monuments: Kleinderhorsthof (A 117, June 8, 1993), Groterhosthof (A81, April 15, 1992), Ravenshof (A 177), Hülshof (A 179, September 28, 1995), Poelmanshof (A 180, December 20, 1995), Jüttenhof (A 111, September 27, 1993), Bönninghof (A 112, September 27, 1993), Hartmeshof (No. 176, January 26, 1996)

Village life

Vernum also has a small village meadow with a memorial stone (for those who fell in war) and a water feature , the so-called “flax fountain”, which is supposed to remind of the former work of linen production that took place in Vernum at that time. There are no shops in Vernum. Vernum has two larger clubs, a sports club and a rifle brotherhood.

Sports

The SV Grün-Weiß Vernum 1949 eV is a sports club of the localities Vernum and Hartefeld, with members also from surrounding areas. Today it offers football, basketball, athletics, aerobics and gymnastics. The club's soccer field is in Vernum, and there is a sports hall in Hartefeld.
