Geographical location

Pont is on the left bank of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine lowlands, as a town in the city of Geldern. The place is on average 27  m above sea level. NN . The Niers, a tributary of the Meuse, flows through it. In the Niersaue, a little north of the town of Wachtendonk, the arm of the “Kleine Niers” separates from the “Große Niers” and reunites with the main river at Haus Golten in Pont. This results in a river island in the u. a. the Niersbroeck lies. In the east, from the Niers-Maaskanal to the mouth of the “Kleine Niers”, the (Große) Niers forms the Ponter border to Geldern, while from there to Haus Bellinghoven the “Kleine Niers” to the border between Nieukerk-Baersdonk and Pont will. In the south, Pont is bounded by Straelen-Vossum, in the west by Walbeck and in the north by Veert.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the former municipality of Pont

Blazon : "In gold (yellow) three red medlar flowers , set 2: 1".

Meaning: The coat of arms of Pont possibly refers to the events that are told in the dragon saga. This coat of arms was also used in the city of Geldern in the past , but has been replaced by today's coat of arms (blue, a striding golden lion, accompanied by three medlar flowers below).

Pont and the Niers

The village of Pont probably owes its name to a crossing (Pons Latin for bridge) over the Niers, as a Roman road to the Rhine branched off from the Roman military road that led through Pont.

The area of the village of Pont is bounded in an easterly direction by the Niers and the Kleine Niers. By exemplary cooperation of Niersverband , country authorities, the city funds and private land owners has been able to renature the Niers between Pont and Neerpont and lay partly in its original bed.

The Niersauenkonzept Pont is one of the first renaturations based on the Niersauenkonzept.

It includes the natural remodeling of watercourses (renaturation of the Niers) on a stretch of around 800 m of the Nierslauf, the restoration of biotope structures typical of floodplains (floodplain renaturation) as well as measures to control recreational use and improve the experience of natural waters by the population. The core of the "Niers renaturation Pont" is the relocation of a section of the Niers (300 m) into a natural stretch of water (420 m).

The planning approval according to Section 31 of the Water Resources Act for a further section of 1,200 m in length is available. The implementation planning is currently being carried out. The execution is planned for the summer of 2006. However, it is dependent on the approval of state funding.

history

Roman times

Pont lies on a Roman road that led from Xanten to Tongeren (Belgium). Today's B 58 is largely on the Roman route in the local area of Pont. This is confirmed by a map by Jakob van Deventer from 1560. Even in the Middle Ages , this street was of national importance. It was an important link from Geldern via Pont to the Meuse . Roman finds have been found in the immediate vicinity of the B 58 at Haus Diesdonk. The last time a bronze Roman mythical creature was found was in 1999, a snake-like creature with the head of a panther. It is dated to the second half of the 2nd century. There is evidence of a Roman settlement south of the village with a grave field comprising 120 graves. Remnants of the collection, which was partly lost in World War II, are housed in the local history museum in Kevelaer. The settlement probably existed from the end of the 1st to the beginning of the 3rd century AD. Little is known of the settlement, as the Franks razed everything Roman during their raids between 200 and 250 AD.

Dragon saga

It is said that around 878 Messrs. Wichard and Lupold von Pont fought a fire-breathing dragon. They found him under a loquat tree and one of the two pierced the dragon with his spear. While the kite was dying, he gasped two or three more times, “Gelre! Gelre! ”The city of Geldern was then founded by the Lords of Pont as a reminder of this heroic deed at the confluence of the Fleuth and Niers rivers.

Excerpt from the dragon saga Der Draak von Pont after Heinrich van de Locht in Ponter Platt:

Before showering Joar, you would have
slept in Pont 'Ne lelken draak.
Dat woar en Bies, so lelk on quoad,
Dat Dire on Menße froat.

De Schiäper on de Müehleknech
On Buere van de Kluus,
Die froat hen van de Landstroat wech
Wie Worsch on Kappesmus.

On hen soat, soap on froat -
Et woar en rein Schandal -
De Maid met de Geit,
De Feß van den Deß,
Dat woar öm doesn't matter.

De Graf van Pont has twee sons,
The fonden dat nit schöen.
Se saije: “Vader, lot ons goan,
Den Draak es onsen doan.
...

Famous daughter of the place

The holy Adelheid von Vilich is known far beyond the borders of the village of Pont. She was the daughter of Bailiff Megingoz von Geldern (973-1001), who is also known as the Count of Geldern, even if Geldern was not a county at that time.

Adelheid was educated in the St. Ursula Abbey in Cologne. She was the first abbess of the Vilich Monastery, founded by her parents after the death of her only brother who died in the Bohemian War in 978. She helped the poor and needy. When there was a great drought in Vilich, she visited this village and distributed food to the starving population. When people begged her to free them from the calamity, she sent prayers to heaven and stabbed the ground with her staff. At this point water shot out of the earth.

This source is therefore also called Adelheid-Pützchen. The water from this spring is said to be able to cure eye diseases. Today this spring is still a destination for pilgrimages.

Adelheid was buried in Vilich. Their relics also rest there.

Territorial reform

The city of Geldern was created in its current form on July 1, 1969 during the first municipal reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia . The municipalities of Kapellen and Vernum and the municipalities of Pont, Veert and Walbeck of the Walbeck office were merged with the city of Geldern.

Village development

The center of Pont originally consisted of a loose collection of some agricultural properties and day laborer's houses around the Ponter Chapel . Farms and forts were scattered around the area . After the last world war , a small settlement for expellees and agricultural workers was built. After that, new building areas were gradually designated on the periphery of the town. Vacant lots were also gradually closed within the village, so that the village gradually formed into a round village with the church almost in the middle. The infrastructure was improved at a relatively early stage by creating the water supply and sewerage system and also paving and expanding the roads. Outside, the “white” settlement and the Goltenhof in Neerpont have developed from former agricultural sideline jobs into smaller housing estates. In the last few decades the narrower local area began to expand, especially in a northerly direction. Although the farms were outsourced, the buildings that were formerly used for agriculture still largely determine the appearance of the town. They now serve as apartments or are used for commercial purposes. Together with the city administration and the Schröder office in Aachen , the village development plan was drawn up in the mid-nineties with great commitment from the population (workshops, working groups, home and support association) and has already been implemented to a large extent, partly by the municipality, but also largely through the actions of the home and development association and the residents and neighborhoods of the individual streets. In the north on Walbecker Strasse and in the west on Kreisstrasse K 34 (Möhlendyck), commercial areas could be identified in which businesses, crafts, trade and services for local and regional needs could settle and expand and thus provide jobs in the village . Craft businesses, shops and service companies are located in the center to a reasonable extent. The parish of St. Antonius is also working on this development. Extensive areas were made available. The former garden of the rectory is now a public park that is constantly being expanded and beautified.

Since 1979 there has been a modern correctional facility in a further outdoor area on the small Niers . She was brought to Pont by the local council at the time to recruit agricultural workers from the “slightly criminal” prisoners. In the course of the rapidly changing conditions, this plan has not become a reality, so that today even seriously criminal prisoners are incarcerated in the Ponter "jail".

In 2005 there were 2,150 inhabitants in Pont, 1603 of them in the local area without the settlement areas in Neerpont. The local Heimat- und Förderverein with its working group “Environment and Beautification” has set itself the goal of accompanying and continuing the communal measures and taking care to preserve the rural-village ambience of the place. Therefore he is always involved in the public planning tasks. The Heimat- und Förderverein is committed to the beautification of the village through its own contributions and financial commitment.

Economic development

In recent years, the commercial areas on the outskirts have been secured and expanded. Nevertheless, emphasis is placed on securing the locations of the local handicraft businesses in order to maintain the rural-village character. New jobs on the edge of the village - Geldern correctional facility , slaughterhouse, Opheis business and service park - make the village more attractive beyond its function as a place to live. Pont has a sizeable number of companies that provide many jobs locally. The expansion of the prison and the slaughterhouse alone will create more than 200 new jobs.

Culture and sights

Buildings

St. Antonius Church The Ponter church is first mentioned in 1452; here, however, the old chapel and not today's church is meant. In 1667 St. Antonius is referred to as the parish church of Pont. In 1866 the construction of the church began. It was consecrated on November 17, 1869, and a church consecration has been handed down for 1872. During the war in 1945, the church was damaged by six artillery hits on the tower, roof and windows. The damage was repaired over the following years.

House Golten House Golten was first mentioned in 1294. In the Middle Ages , Golten House, which was then called “te Boemert”, was the seat of the Lords of Pont - the legend after the founder of the castle and the city of Geldern. In 1586, Dutch soldiers devastated the property and burned it down. The house was not rebuilt until the 17th century. The tower still dates from this time. All other buildings are more recent. Today the mansion is used as the administrative headquarters for the adjoining old people's home. On April 15, 1992, Haus Golten was added to the list of historical monuments of the municipality of Geldern under the number A82.

House Diesdonk. Duncker Collection, 1857 to 1883

Ingenray House Two-storey Ingenray House with neo-Gothic corner observatories and horseshoe-shaped extensions. The core of the house dates from 1461. However, parts of the house are much older. The house was owned by knights who were in the service of the Duke of Geldern. A water mill belonged to the house, which is no longer there today.

House Diesdonk Two L-shaped, adjoining, two-storey buildings with the gate entrance from the 18th century are still preserved from the buildings of the former noble residence House Diesdonk . These were converted for residential purposes in the 18th century.

Bonshof The Bonshof is a single-storey former farm from the late 18th century. Behind the house is the stable part at right angles. In the center of the village, the courtyard has an extremely important, space-forming function. It's right across from the church.

Residential building Antoniusstraße 19a Two-storey residential building with a hipped roof from the late 19th century. The house is partially green. The stately building has a particularly important role to play.

Penitentiary money The Penitentiary funds currently has 679 detention places for adult male offenders .

landscape

Niersauen On the bike and hiking trail that runs along the Niers, visitors are informed about the renaturation project in some places by information boards . The measures will soon be expanded to the south. As a result of the renaturation, a piece of the typical Lower Rhine floodplain landscape was restored. A retreat for rare animal and plant species has also been created here. The old mansions of Haus Ingenray, Haus Diesdonk and Haus Golten lie along the Niers.

Cross-border recreation in the area of the Fossa Eugeniana The local recreation area Fossa Eugeniana stands for a cross-border cooperation between the former Dutch municipality Arcen en Velden (since 2010 part of the municipality Venlo) and the German cities Straelen and Geldern. This cooperation emerged from the strong ties of the local population over the centuries. This can also be seen in great similarities in the culture in this area. For example, the dialect on both sides of the border is only slightly different.

Pont is also in this area, which can be accessed by the following routes:

FOSSA route This cycle route was created around the central theme of the area, the Fossa Eugeniana. Along the remains of the canal from the time of the Spaniards, the path leads through varied nature and past historic mansions and castles, farms and mills.

AGRO route The agricultural and forestry importance of the region is documented along the route. Flowers and vegetables are grown in large and modern farms and also marketed and processed in the area.

music

Musikverein Pont - youth wind orchestra The youth wind orchestra Pont has 45 members in the main orchestra and 30 music students. The next generation is secured through intensive training in individual and group lessons as well as basic courses. The Musikverein performs around thirty to forty times a year at religious and secular events, and annually organizes a New Year's concert with a regional character in the auditorium of the Lise-Meitner-Gymnasium in Geldern with up to 800 visitors. To mark the 25th anniversary of the association in 2005, the youth wind orchestra released a first CD entitled "music" on which the musicians present themselves with nine titles. Further activities are: · Vacation and weekend leisure time (including trips abroad and to the twin town of Fürstenberg / Brandenburg combined with benefit concerts), · Participation in the live concert WDR4, · Musical design of the mass on Christmas Eve by a wind group in the chapel of the Haus Golten retirement home, · Traditional playing of Christmas carols on Christmas Eve at various locations in the village.

Rheingold Men's Choir Twenty men rehearse weekly and prepare for an annual concert, for open singing with guest associations and guest appearances with choir friends. Club outings - often to befriended men's choir clubs - should not be missing.

Church choir St. Antonius 57 singers meet with their conductor Theo Büren for weekly choir rehearsals. They see their main task in the organization of church services, festive masses and church concerts. In the spring of each year, their theatrical performances attract many visitors. They regularly and actively show their involvement in local events. An excursion is offered within the association every year. In November, of course, the traditional Feast of Cecilia should not be missing.

Parks and green spaces

Despite the closure of many vacant lots and the designation of small building areas, the village itself has not lost its village character with extensive development. The reason for this are the many green areas and low-lying meadows as well as the very spacious garden areas with old trees. In particular, the large public park next to the church with its sometimes rare trees and bushes is a place of rest and relaxation.

The same applies to the self-prepared village meadow with seating under old apple trees and with a view of the new craftsmen and club tree.

Sports

The local sports club VfL Pont has around 300 members in 2018 (including 160 children and young people). A senior soccer team, two youth soccer teams, two women's gymnastics groups and three girls' gymnastics groups form the club. VfL organizes the village tournament, the forest festival, several family outings and various youth and senior tournaments. A handmade paper evening is held by the old men department. The clubhouse on the soccer field was built in-house. Since August 2005 it has been the last club in the Kleve district to have its own grass pitch.
