history

Pilgrimage chapel

Around the year 1430 was in an ash a Madonna found. The pilgrimage chapel of St. Maria was built on this site and was consecrated on July 3, 1431 by Cologne's auxiliary bishop Konrad von Arnsberg . The name Aengenesch is derived from "An der Esche" and was only created after the chapel was built. Since then, the place has developed into a place of pilgrimage, which is particularly popular with people from the surrounding area. Almost 1000 pilgrims come to the small town every year .

According to legend, the image of the Madonna was found by residents of the Boeckelt peasantry who had wanted their own church for some time. They took the Madonna to a more centrally located courtyard, but the Madonna disappeared and reappeared in the ash tree until the farmers accepted it as the location of the church.

In 1436 Duke Arnold donated the chapel to the Carmelite Monastery in Geldern. A pastor from this monastery lived near the chapel and performed the services.

Aengenesch pilgrimage chapel

The chapel in Aengenesch is a single-nave Gothic brick building from 1431. In 1720 it was extended to the west by a yoke . It has a neo-Gothic altar, a late Gothic Madonna from around 1480 and altar paintings from the early 16th century. The miraculous image, the Sorrowful Mother, is in the side chapel.

Langendonk House

From Haus Langendonk only the tower stump of the moated castle Langendonk, which used to be directly on the Fleuth, is preserved. The knight's seat was first mentioned in 1391. At that time he belonged to the Electoral Cologne Office and Court of Rheinberg and was a Cologne fief. The Langendonk house was owned by the von Wyenhorst family, who later took on leading positions in the administration of the Duchy of Geldern, it lost its original meaning as a border fortress against Geldern. The still preserved three-storey open tower stump with narrow window openings and high access opening suggests a fortified castle.
