Life

Stefan Antonius Theophil Frankewitz was born in Straelen on the Lower Rhine in 1952 as the son of former Lieutenant General Bruno Frankewitz and his wife Mariagnes von Kempis from East Prussia . He grew up on Haus Eyll in Straelen, whose owner he was from 1969. After graduating from the Friedrich-Spee-Gymnasium in Geldern in 1973, he studied history, prehistory and early history , art history and folklore in Marburg and Bonn . In November 1984 he did his doctorate with Georg Droege at the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland at the University of Bonn with the thesis The Geldrische Ämter Geldern, Goch and Straelen in the late Middle Ages , which was published as a book in 1986.

From 1985 Frankewitz worked for twelve months in the historical city archive of Goch . During this time he not only created a Goch bibliography, but also researched the Goch city rights and privileges, about which he published a publication in 1985 entitled Privileges of the Counts and Dukes of Geldern for the city of Goch . In September 1986 he moved to the city archive of Geldern, where he took over the management. In the following year Frankewitz was one of two scholarship recipients of the Albert Steeger Prize , with which scientific work on topics related to Rhenish cultural studies is promoted.

Frankewitz published numerous publications on cultural-historical and folklore topics. His focus was on the national history of the former Duchy of Geldern and the regional history of the Lower Rhine. He was also the managing director of MESPILVS, the society for the promotion of the city archive of Geldern e. V., of which he was one of the founding members in 1994, and was a member of the board of the Lower Rhine Regional Association of the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection. He died after a serious illness in September 2013.
