Georg Droege

Georg Droege (born March 25, 1929 in Krefeld ; † November 9, 1993 ) was a German historian .

Georg Droege attended schools in Rheydt , Mönchengladbach and Krefeld. In 1947 he passed the Abitur at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium in Krefeld. In 1948 he began studying history, Latin and philosophy as well as law and political science at the University of Bonn. With Franz Steinbach he received his doctorate in 1955 on the constitution and economy in Kurköln under Dietrich von Moers (1414–1463) . From 1955 to 1966 he was an assistant at the Institute for Historical Regional Studies . The habilitation took place in 1965 with the work Landrecht und Lehnrecht in the high Middle Ages with Franz Petri . On July 1, 1966, he was appointed dietitian. A few years as a private lecturer and professor in Münster and Saarbrücken followed. From the summer semester 1968 to the summer semester 1969 he was a substitute professor for constitutional, social and economic history in Bonn.

On March 31, 1970, he was appointed adjunct professor and on September 1, 1970, he was appointed to the chair of historical regional studies and social and economic history at the newly founded University of Trier . There he was dean of Faculty III (history, geography, political science and sociology) in the early years of the university. After Edith Ennen's retirement in 1975, he succeeded her as Professor of Medieval and Modern History and Director of the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland at the University of Bonn . He remained in this position until he left in 1991 due to illness . Martina Stercken was one of his academic students .

Droege mainly worked in the area of ​​medieval constitutional history. The essays on the financial resources of the medieval territorial state and their administration, written from 1966 to 1970, became fundamental : The financial foundations of the territorial state in West and East Germany at the turn of the Middle Ages to the modern age (1966), The Electoral Cologne Rhine Tolls in the Middle Ages (1966/67 ), The formation of medieval territorial financial management (1970). Droege became a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia in 1982 .
