Weyer Castle

Weyer Castle (also: Wayer ) is a former moated castle built at the end of the 16th century northeast of the core town of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia .

history

West side of the castle: on the left the older, late Gothic northern part; on the right the southern part built during the Renaissance

There is evidence of a manor on the site of the castle in 1399, which later came into the possession of the von Osterwitz tavern . After they died out in 1478, Sankt Veiter citizens took over the property, so in 1532 a Hans Gottschacher “am Weyer” was settled. Around 1550 the Rülko family took over the estate, an immigrant family from Saxony. In 1585 Weyer came to Anna von Liechtenstein, born von Khüburg and wife of the Carinthian Hereditary Land Marshal Konrad von Liechtenstein. She had the residence completely rebuilt and expanded by the Murau master builder Christoph Steiner until 1590. In 1601 the St. Vitus citizen Hans Ladroner acquired the property that he had leased since 1596. His widow was expelled as a Lutheran in 1629 and Weyer was transferred to the Bishop of Gurk . However, he soon sold it again. Until 1783 the property belonged to the St. Georgen Abbey on the Längsee . In 1778 an extension took place, to which a corresponding year on the second floor of the south wing indicates. After the monastery had been profaned, Weyer Castle was again owned by various St. Veiter families. It was acquired by Thaddäus Max Egger in 1788. From 1891 onwards, the later governor of Carinthia, Arthur Lemisch, lived in the castle.

In the 20th century, the exterior of the castle was neglected for a long time during many years of agricultural use. The listed building has been used as a veterinary clinic since the 1990s .

Building description

Arcaded courtyard

The late medieval Weyer Castle is located northeast of the city center behind the cemetery in an open field not far from the Wimitz . The multi-part structure built around the middle of the 16th century is on the one hand castle-like and defensive in its layout, on the other hand, castle-like and representative. Nothing can be seen of the former moat, only the iron chain rollers of the drawbridge at the south-facing gate are reminiscent of its earlier appearance as a moated castle.

The two- and three-story building wings enclose a longitudinal courtyard with an irregular trapezoidal floor plan and two-story arcades. While the two-storey north, west and east wings with castle-like fronts (loopholes and small windows) are almost unadorned and only have towers with pyramid roofs protruding at the building corners, the three-storey south side is richly structured. In the middle of the west side emerges from the two-story wing a three-story gate tower with a Renaissance portal and barred windows. Above the entrance there is a building inscription with the year 1585 and the coat of arms of Konrad von Liechtenstein-Murau.
