Griebenow Castle Chapel
The Griebenow Castle Chapel is the only 15-sided building of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District . Today's village church in the Griebenow district of the Süderholz community in the Vorpommern-Rügen district is one of the few examples of Protestant church building in Swedish Pomerania . It belonged to the estate of Schloss Griebenow .
Between 1648 and 1654 the chapel was built for Gerdt Anthon Rehnskiöld (Keffenbrink). After his death in 1658 he was buried in the family vault under the chapel. The half-timbered building is supported by 15 corner posts made of oak, which are decorated in the upper part with grotesque masks. The tent roof ends in a high, slender central point.
The interior has a flat-coupled tent cover. Most of the furnishings date from the 17th century. The altarpiece and pulpit are dated 1654. The chairs arranged in a semicircle and the patron's box are carved with Renaissance shapes . The altarpiece depicting the Descent from the Cross dates from the 18th century. The pews in the sacristy and the confessional are carved in cartilage style. A positive from 1654 by an unknown organ builder with two registers (Gedackt 8 ′, Flute 4 ′), which stands on a small gallery, serves as the organ .
The churchyard is surrounded by a 15-sided brick wall with arched niches from the 18th century. Access is through the wooden belfry with a tent roof, which, like the chapel, was built in half-timbered construction. Visitors to the chapel must pass under the bell dated 1655. A second bell also dates from the 17th century.
Extensive restoration work was carried out in 1949 and 1988.
