Names

The water is named " Castle Pond " from the Hohenfreyberg Castle above , which used to be considered a castle. In more recent maps it is usually marked with "Schweingger Weiher". In the first recording sheet from 1818 one reads "Imstall- or Schweincker Weiher". The Imstall was a farm that was sold in the 17th century at the latest and stood east of the pond on one of the hills.

history

It is not known when the castle pond was built. However, it was likely to have existed as early as the 15th century, because its water was led to Schweingg with dicks and there supplied the water power for the old Hohenfreyberg mill . The pond is specifically mentioned for the first time in 1609. At that time, the Hohenfreyberg bailiff Hans Hacker wrote to the rulers that the "Imser Weiher" had been drained and partly sown with Haber or other crops. The other part cannot be planted because it is too deep and therefore too wet. This change from a pond to an agriculturally usable area happened every nine years, probably to prevent the pond from silting up with water plants .

In 1803 the miller Andreas Berkmiller was able to acquire the pond and the surrounding area from the lords of Freyberg-Eisenberg in Schweingg . With the water from the overflow, he operated 2–3 grinders, despite the sometimes sparse amount of water. From around 1900 the mill operation was reduced because the cultivation of grain declined in favor of the dairy industry. From 1926 onwards, hydropower was used to generate electricity. The miller at the time, Joseph Berkmiller, had iron pipes laid from the dam of the pond to his farm in Schweingg, where he replaced the mill wheels with a turbine that delivered around 6 hp. A voltage of 65 V could be generated using a dynamo. The machines in the dairy built in 1914 were also supplied with it.

Reservoir

The dam on the west side of the pond is 130 m long and 30 m wide at the crown. Its height is up to 4.50 m. The material for its construction comes mainly from the adjacent northern slope. In the dam bottom there was originally a wooden water drain in the form of a plank shaft. In 1897 this collapsed, so that the mill threatened to flood. However, a safe drain could be established through concrete pipes.

The farmers cut peat to the north-east of the pond for many years. This lowered the area by 2-3 m. When it rained heavily, the water poured into the rear moor of the pond and flowed northeast towards Seeger Schweingg ( Seeg ), where it caused damage. Due to official requirements, the water level of the pond may therefore only be kept so high that even torrential rain can be absorbed without problems.

meaning

The castle pond is an important part of the "Hohenfreyberg-Eisenberg" conservation area . Because water plants thrive in large areas, the body of water is not suitable as a bathing lake. This makes it with its moorland an attractive retreat for a diverse flora and fauna . A hike around the lake takes about an hour.
