The Schmelzbergstrasse is a residential area in the city of Zurich . It follows almost the entire length of the border between the quarters of Fluntern and Oberstrass . Part of the street is designed as a staircase for pedestrians.

Names

The name Schmelzbergstrasse has nothing to do with melting , but rather goes back to a former landowner. The field name for the area is handed down from 1225 and was called Snellisperch at that time , which is interpreted as the mountain by an owner with the name Schnell or Snell . The area along the Schmelzbergstrasse served as a vineyard until at least the beginning of the 20th century .

course

The Schmelzbergstrasse runs in the fall line up the Zürichberg . It starts at Rämistrasse across from ETH Zurich . The lower part leads into the Frauenklinikstrasse, while the Schmelzbergstrasse continues as a staircase. The stairs end at Bolleystrasse. From Huttenstrasse, Schmelzbergstrasse is again open to motor vehicle traffic. The Quartierstrasse ends at Gladbachstrasse .

Schmelzbergstrasse is in the Fluntern district, as are the buildings on the right with even house numbers. The buildings on the left belong to the Oberstrass quarter. Only in the uppermost part of the street between Hochstrasse and Gladbachstrasse do the buildings on the left also belong to the Fluntern district.

traffic

There is no through traffic through Schmelzbergstrasse. At the end of the 19th century it was planned to run a cable tram or a rack railway through the street to develop the Zürichberg. The project, which was intended as a continuation of the Polybahn , did not get beyond the planning phase. It became superfluous with the construction of the tram line of the Central Zurich Mountain Railway.

Development

At the confluence of Schmelzbergstrasse and Rämistrasse, the buildings of the Agriculture and Forestry Department of ETH Zurich are on the left, and the University Hospital buildings on the right . The old ETH Zurich observatory is located at 25 Schmelzbergstrasse .
