The school building at Eisenacher Schmelzerstraße 19 was built in 1861/62 as a brick building for the Eisenacher Realgymnasium founded in 1843, which it moved into in spring 1862. The building on Schmelzerstraße was subsequently used by the German Advanced School, which existed until 1947. It was followed by the commercial vocational and business school of the Eisenach district . In 1992 the building was extensively renovated.

In 1997 the building was considered as the location of the Eisenach University of Cooperative Education, which then moved into the Carl Alexander School on Wartenberg in the north of the city. The vocational school moved out in 2000 and the building was used by the medical college for six years. In 2006 the building became the seat of the Volkshochschule in Eisenach.
